OCEAN CITY, NJ

PROJECT STATUS: BIDDING & NEGOTIATION

The client came to us with the question of what to do with an outdated fireplace that did not connect with the context of the area, as well as a stagnant wall that was not contributing to the function of the entry and living room spaces. Therefore, we specified the functions and tied them to the areas of the home that mattered most.

First, we identified the entry as a underutilized space, with no real space for storage of shoes and other items that would be regularly used when entering and exiting, so we created a small window seat with integrated storage, that could also be used as a flex dining table for when large events were hosted in the space, which the client often does.

Next, the fireplace was never the central focus of the room, and the homeowners would have to stagger the television to the side of room, which was uncomfortable for the layout. Therefore, the television is placed centrally above the new fireplace, with flanking shelving for appointments and other stored items.

Aesthetically, the client wished to have a rather subdued look, but certain details like the wood backsplash of the cabinets, the brass lighting and the white, vertical shiplap cabinetry and accent walls harken to the famous nautical community in the area, giving the space meaning for those locals who come and enjoy it with the homeowners.
